Expanding Access - Clinical Trials & You
Joshua Southards & Camille D. Johnson
Care Access

Learn more about the past, present, and future of clinical trials. Over the past several decades, researchers have made countless breakthroughs that have benefited the population at large. Unfortunately, many researchers conducted studies unethically. The evolution of ethical and regulatory guidelines has done much to protect patients, but that too has come at a cost. Clinical trials are now frequently only an option for those in major markets or those with the means to travel frequently to those markets. Care Access is a decentralized research organization with a mission to engage every healthcare professional in clinical research and to make clinical trials a care option for every patient. Learn how Care Access & Faith Family Medical Center have partnered to close the gaps in clinical trials and how you can replicate this model in your own practice.

Proposed session objectives:
Participants will increase understanding of
1. How clinical trials have evolved over the past few decades.
2. How a typical clinical trial is conducted.
3. How they may be able to close the gap and offer clinical trials to their patients.

4:15 pm - 5:15 pm
The Challenges and Responsibilities of Leading a Faith-Based Health Ministry
Cathy Bowling, Mike Arnold
CCHF

Faith-based clinics are distinct in their motivations and in the way they think about mission. This workshop will explore some of those distinctives. More importantly, we will discuss how faith might inform the way we lead in those settings. Being a faith-based clinic is more about character and mission than it is about doctrine. How can we be respectful and inclusive of our patients, our staff and our volunteers, and yet remain faithful to the mission and culture that represent our calling. This interactive session will look at principles and examples, and lead to open discussions about leading well in a faith-based setting.

Proposed session objectives:
  • Draw a distinction between faith-informed leadership, and some standard business practices.
  • Help participants evaluate their own leadership skills in faith settings.
  • Build mutual encouragement and support relationships between faith-based FCCs across Tennessee.
2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
HR primer for free and charitable clinics
Annabelle Cruz-Orengo
TCCN

Workplace laws are evolving quickly. Employers should review their policies and procedures to ensure that they are updated as new laws take effect at the federal, state and local levels and to promote good HR practices. In this session we will discuss the fundamental role HR policies and practices have in creating effective organizations. We will also review some key elements that should be included in those.

Learning Objectives:
  • Overview of HR practices
  • Developing an effective Employee handbook
  • A summary of best hiring practices

3:15 pm - 4:15 pm
Data & partnerships to Advance Health Equity in BCC
Elizabeth Berardi & Roberta White
TN Department of Health

Comprehensive data analysis and strategic partnerships can contribute to progress in addressing populations disproportionately burdened by breast and cervical cancer. By identifying areas of need, communicating the findings, and leveraging partnerships, service delivery to vulnerable populations increased during the COVID pandemic.

Proposed session objectives:
  • Understand how to use data to identify disparities and gaps in program areas
  • Understand how to leverage data to create new or strengthen existing partnerships to achieve health equity
  • Understand how partnerships play a vital role in reaching disproportionately burdened populations and can increase service delivery
4:15 pm - 5:15 pm
Disrupting the burden cycle of healthcare workers
Krystine Hong & Ritika Chada
Sostento

Sostento will provide a 50-minute session on how we have worked WITH (not FOR) free and charitable clinics to disrupt the burden cycle of public healthcare workers. Highlighting the origin and need of our innovative design process in public health spaces, we'll also share the ways FCC leaders and staff can feel empowered to approach innovative problem-solving in their own spaces.

Proposed session objectives:
  • Sostento's design process and how it disrupts the burden of public health workers
  • Sharing case studies highlighting how we work WITH (not FOR) free and charitable clinics by deep listening, needfinding, and building an initiative to build a sustainable solution for the need.
  • Hands-on activity for participants to allow them to try on the problem-solving skills Sostento uses every day
  • Q+A
*Sessions in Ballroom D are recommended for Community Health Workers

2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer -  the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide
Chance Littrell
Mental Health America of the MidSouth

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Each year thousands of Americans, like you, are saying "Yes" to saving the life of a friend, colleague, sibling, or neighbor.

Objectives:
  1. Understand the common myths and facts surrounding suicidal behavior
  2. Recognize and identify three risk factors for suicide
  3. Demonstrate how to ask about potential suicide intent
  4. Demonstrate how to listen and persuade someone to get help.
3:15 pm - 4:15 pm
Collaborations and Intersections: TCCN and TAADAS
Mary Linden
TAADAS

Session will highlight collaborations between TCCN and TAADAS in the past and highlight the potential for future such collaborations in key areas:

1. Advocacy
2. Physical and behavioral health intersections and co-occurring treatment
     a. Naloxone distribution
     b. MAT
     c. Pain Management
     d. Shared providers
3. RX Aware and prevention education/campaigns

Discussion of the potential for the above areas of collaboration will focus on identifying barriers and brainstorming solutions that will encourage collaboration.

Proposed session objectives:
Participants will:
  • Discuss at least one area for potential advocacy that engages TCCN and TAADAS
  • Identify one area of potential co-occurring treatment or intersection for their program with a TAADAS member
  • Identify one prevention topic that their agency can implement
4:15 pm - 5:15 pm
Improving Patient Experience through Empathy
April Steele
Epic Pivot

Empathy is the foundation of human-centered design—a method of problem-solving that centers the experiences of real people in the process of developing solutions. Because charitable clinics provide care to patients who are dealing with complex, interrelated challenges that affect their overall health and wellness, understanding these patients' needs, beliefs, and experiences is critical to developing services and delivery models that work. In this session, participants will learn about patient-centered design: What it is, why it works, and how it can be applied in their own organizations. Participants will have the opportunity to practice using empathy to solve a problem, and will leave with a set of tools to improve their clinic's services, care delivery, and patient outreach practices.

Participants will:
  • Learn about human-centered design principles and understand how they can be used to quickly, cheaply, and effectively solve problems
  • Consider challenges in their own organizations that might be solved using a patient-centered perspective
  • Practice using empathy to solve a problem, and gain experience and tools to bring back to their own organization
