The Power of Community to Advance Good Health
Jacy Warrell

Rural Health Association of Tennessee

Rural and other minority populations experience barriers to good health in many ways. A person’s zip code is the number one indicator of access to healthcare, broadband, transportation, income, and housing. Despite these challenges, many local communities and statewide partners are equipped to address these and other drivers of health – but they cannot do so alone. This session will provide an overview of the state of health in Tennessee and how strong community partnerships can change Tennessee’s health outcomes for the better.

Proposed session objectives:
o Increase understanding of health disparities among rural and other minority populations
o Discover tools and resources for addressing social drivers of health
o Develop plan for strengthening rural and minority health partnerships

How to "right size" the use of strategic planning, use of data, and improvement methods to make your job easier!
Jenny Bartlett-Prescott & Rachel Depperschmidt
Church Health

Leaders in free and charitable clinics (FCC) often feel stretched to do the most possible with limited resources. While necessary for sustainability, demonstrating impact and communicating future strategy can often feel overwhelming when trying to translate “best practice” from hospital or insured clinic settings into the FCC environment. The trick is to right size the tools we need as leaders of free and charitable clinics to make our jobs easier – not harder! This session will provide planning and decision-making frameworks that are practical for leaders at any size clinic, as well as doable methods for communicating the impact of our work. Jenny Bartlett-Prescott, COO of Church Health, will share the successes and failures along the way as they have grown from a small clinic to a large interdisciplinary healthcare organization serving the uninsured and their families in Memphis, TN.

Proposed session objectives:
1. Identify tools for planning and decision-making that assist clinic leaders in carrying out their responsibilities and understand how to “right size” the tools to fit their unique environment and needs.
2. Assess a variety of options for measuring and describing the impact of their organization’s services. Learn creative and practical ways to quantify impact through measures and data. Discuss the role of qualitative descriptions of impact and how to apply them most effectively.
3. Learn from each other the successes and challenges we have in planning and outcome measurement as leaders in the free and charitable clinic sector. Position ourselves as leaders and learners as we identify lessons from each other to take back to our own setting.

*Sessions in Ballroom D are recommended for Community Health Workers

Changing the Conversation of Rural: Using an Assets-based Approach
Laura Trull

Center for Rural Health Research - East Tennessee State University

This presentation will provide rural providers with the language to change the conversation on rural practice from one of despair and lack of resources to one about benefits and strengths, empowering new professionals to work in rural. This is not to minimize or be blind to the challenges in rural healthcare, but to identify all the strengths we have to bring to bear on these challenges and highlight all that we have to preserve and share. Participants will be presented with some models for assets-based approaches and will be encouraged to integrate the approaches into their practice.

Proposed session objectives:
  • Participants will be able to identify and share positive counter-statistics and language changes to combat the barrage of negative statistics about rural areas.
  • Participants will be exposed to different models of asset-based approaches and encouraged to utilize those strategies in their work.
  • Participants will identify rural strengths and strategize about ways they can utilize those strengths in their practice for improved health and wellbeing in their communities.
